Community nutrition workers (CNW) training report

Community Nutrition Workers (CNW) is a strategy set to extend case findings of common childhood illnesses beyond health facilities enabling more children have access to lifesaving treatments provided by a trained cadre of community Nutrition workers (CNWs). CNW generally refers to an integrated approach for assessing and classifying signs and symptoms of diarrhea, refer malnutrition in children under five, and providing home-based treatment or referral of children presenting with danger signs.

Simple and cost-effective interventions are known for CNWs in the management of diarrhea with no danger signs and refer to malnutrition children, the administration of the combined use of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) and Zinc tablets to treat diarrhea. If these interventions are implemented on a large scale, and among hard-to-reach populations which often carry a higher burden of diseases, they can significantly contribute to reducing child morbidity and mortality. The approach also normally includes health promotion and preventive measures such as fostering mothers for vaccinating their children, deworming, and newborn care. As trusted members of their communities, CHWs are essential to Somaliland’s goals to provide whole-person care and help people live longer, healthier lives within healthy families and communities
